I Will Make You Absolutely Beautiful in Your Portrait!

I recently asked my clients and friends to share with me their top fears, reasons, or concerns about why they would not pay to be photographed by a professional photographer. While there were many different personal reasons, because everyone is a unique individual, MOST responses included a version of “I am not pretty or good looking enough” or “I don’t have the body for that”. So I decided to write a blog about those common misconceptions.

Let me start by saying that I completely understand where you are coming from. I did not really like myself being photographed as well. But that does not come from a place of comparison to others. For me, it comes from a place of not wanting the attention on myself. It is absolutely about the fear I have of being looked at and judged. It was a fear about being shamed for being me. This is a fear that took a long time to understand and get over. But, I did it. I needed to learn that it was only myself that put up that wall of fear and negativity. After all, I am my own worst critic. It came from a place of being told as a young teenager that I was not good enough, I was not loveable, and that I did not deserve anything more than what I had. I am here to tell you that the negativity you think about yourself is false. You are good enough, you are “pretty” enough, and you deserve to be photographed and look and feel wonderful while doing so!

Now, I will admit that often I look at the people that I have had the pleasure of photographing and think, “I wish I looked that good”. Do you want to know the truth? MOST of my clients, except the 2 actual full-time professional models, have expressed their unjustly preconceived notion that they “do not photograph well” before their session begins! Yet, here they are for the world to see and admire. Here is one example below:

My Fashion Guy Kurt!

Kurt told me he hates his pictures. Then we worked together and created this great work. I turned this into my professor for my portfolio project and he said, “The only thing missing from this photo is the word ‘TIME’ at the top.”!

So I Did!

After hearing that, I couldn’t resist. So I created this mock-up “TIME” cover and I loved it!

The next example is one of my proudest accomplishments. People do not really believe me when I tell them that this next gentleman is my landscaper. He came over to ask about doing a graduation session for his daughter. I simply asked him to pose for me to give her personal idea of what I can do. Now, the idea for this one came at the end when he wanted to show off his tattoos. I captured one of my most talked about pieces of art:

These clients are not professional models. They are average people that look extraordinary! As a professional photographer, it is my job to make you look good, not yours. I take the time to get to know who you are and what makes you, you. There is always something about you that is beautiful if you let others show it to you. Maybe you have the most beautiful eyes, perhaps you treated yourself to a new haircut, or maybe you bought an outfit that really compliments you. All you have to do is show up and let me take care of the rest. I can and WILL capture you for the beautiful person that you are!
